Excellent Southern Indian food

Sunnyvale is full of great Southern Indian restaurants, and this is one of the best of them. The interior is not much to look at but the food is amazing.

I enjoyed the Special Thali which is a sampler of all kinds of sauces. The Special Rava Masala Dosa was also amazing, with a great filling. We also had an appetizer sampler which had all kinds of idlys and lentil donuts and such.

The food is spicy but not too hot so you won't be dying at the end of your meal.

Pros: Great food, great prices
Cons: Interior not much to look at

Udupi Palace - Sunnyvale

udupi_sunnyvaleDescription: Wildly popular with the mostly Indian patrons, but still a near secret with everyone else. The South Indian vegetarian cuisine here is some of the best and most authentic in the Bay Area. Expect a line on weekend nights. The service is remarkabley friendly for such a bustling restaurant. Everything is under $10, and the decor is simple but refined. Locations in Sunnyvale, Fremont/Newark, and Berkeley.

Indian food that stands apart

Udupi Palace's South Indian specialties are a pleasing change from other area reastaurants

By Robert Rich

After having some of the best meals of my life in the homes of Indian friends, I became a bit jaded about most local Indian restaurants. But when a friend recommended Udupi Palace, I wanted to give it a try.

Located on El Camino Real south of Wolf Road, Udupi Palace comprises part of a scattered chain of ten or so restaurants owned by a Bay Area partnership. With locations ranging from Toronto, Seattle, Queens, Fremont and Los Angeles, the sites all correspond to large Indian communities.

Udupi Palace specializes in South Indian vegetarian cuisine. The flavors are so rich and complex, the textures so satisfying, that animal proteins need not enter the experience.

5 out of 5 stars Always crowded, too many kids in the joint, but the food is top-notch. Try a thali for starters, but be warned - the portions are huge! Two thalis and two appetizers for two people = leftovers! capnhank   2005-12-15
5 out of 5 stars I guess my favorite Bay Area restaurant is Udupi Palace. There are several in the area, but I prefer the Sunnyvale location. If you go for the first time I recommend the South Indian thali. netphemera   2005-01-18
5 out of 5 stars Lives up to the name of the coastal town in Karnataka, with the very best of Karnataka cuisine. Great food at reasonable prices. Service is quite efficient, the noise makes one feel at home. Maddyme   2004-11-22

Udupi Palace is located on the busy streets of El Camino Real in Sunnyvale. I know Ive driven by many times but never thought about visiting until it appeared on the wish list. Characterized as being Southern Indian cuisine, Im not much of an expert as to the differences than Northern but I believe the Southern style is much spicier and dishes are soupier (is that a word?)

The restaurant is sparkling clean with the smell of spicy indian food in the air. The buffet costs around $10 which includes a plate of dosas. Along the wall sits a nice buffet line that comes with these fancy steel plates. The plates must last forever.

I wont go into detail what I piled on my plate since I dont know all the different plates. And for you southern indian food experts, turn away as I butcher the descriptions of the items :) So I had the large potato chip looking thing in Picture #4. I would love to have these things in the movie theater. I had the pancake looking things, some fried whatevers, dahl, tamarind rice, eggplant whatever, curry something, and a warm rice dessert. The dosas were filled with lentels? I wasnt too keen on it, I normally just like the plain dosas with the dipping sauces. The one thing I did notice was the uses of herbs that were left in the dishes. You would be eating part of a dish and find yourself chewing on what appeared to be tree bark or leaves.

I apologize for not taking the proper names down but the positive thing is the food here is damm good. All the dishes had complex flavors with some additional heat. I made 2 trips to the buffet line and left completely full. I thought it was money well spent. Although its strictly vegetarian I feel confident you wont miss the meat.
